Hayao Miyazaki in his studioHayao Miyazaki was born on January 5th, 1941. His family would often move during his childhood due to bombing. During High School, Miyazaki’s interest in animation was sparked by the movie Panda and the Magic Serpent, this would inspire him to follow a career in animation. Miyazaki would later share this dream with his son, Goro.

Studio Ghibli logo With funding and support from Yasuyoshi Tokuma, Miyazaki founded Studio Ghibli with his good friend, Toshio Suzuki. Miyazaki and Suzuki worked on Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind together, which then prompted Tokuma to encourage them to create their own studio. Many of Studio Ghibli’s movies feature prominent anti-war and environmentalist themes. The Studio has officially made 20 films with plans for more in the future.

Whichever year one of his films come out, it is almost always the highest grossing film in Japan. Miyazaki started to earn global recognition for Princess Mononoke in 1994, and would even secure an academy award for Spirited Away in 2001. These days, Miyazaki’s films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Howl’s Moving Castle are known worldwide.
